» Serologic testing for syphilis

(RPR or VDRL)

This is a blood test for Syphilis. This test is generally ordered at the first prenatal visit. A normal result is negative. If you test positive you will be treated with antibiotics. Your partner will also be tested and treated if necessary.

Syphilis can cause a variety of birth defects as well as stillbirth. If the mother is treated with antibiotics before the fourth month, it almost always prevents damage to the fetus.

Serologic testing for toxoplasmosis

This test is for toxoplasmosis, an infection that is transmitted through cat feces. It is generally ordered at the first prenatal visit. A normal result is negative. If you show positive, you may be treated with antibiotics in order to prevent transmission to the fetus.
