This is a test to see if you carry the gene for the Tay-Sachs disease. This is normally performed on people of Ashkenazi Jewish background on the first prenatal visit. A normal result is negative. If you test positive, your partner will also be tested. If you are both carriers of the gene, you will be referred for genetic counseling. Prenatal diagnosis of Tay-Sachs is available for the fetus.
