A urine culture or urinalysis tests for urinary tract infection. The urine test can also be tested for increased sugar, which could be a sign of diabetes and for protein, which could indicate kidney disease.
This test is often performed at the first prenatal visit, or at any time during pregnancy if symptoms are present.
A negative result is normal and indicates no infection. If your test is positive, you will be treated with antibiotics and then retested.
